are meant to be enjoying as Christian people. It is not God’s purpose for us to shuffle through this world, but to abound with life, and with glory, and to share in his great abundance. That is the contrast John gives us. A second, and similar, contrast is seen in verse 17: ‘The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.’ This is a tremendous contrast between the old and the new, and in John’s Gospel the characteristic of the new is always abundance.1 This is the whole emphasis
